Original Tomb Raider Level Now Playable in Browsers

The City of Vilcabamba is now playable in browsers.

A group of developers is aiming to bring the original Tomb Raider games online by building them from scratch. And a fully playable level from the first Tomb Raider is now available to play in browsers.

After reportedly being denied access to Eidos' original source code, developers in the OpenTomb project, as spotted by Polygon have decided to rebuild the first five Lara Croft adventures from scratch. The team has so far completed the second level of the first game — the City of Vilcabamba level — and made it available for play while allowing players to alternate between first and third person viewpoints.

For developers looking to contribute to the project, the OpenTomb team has created a Github page that can be joined. The developers also address the reason for project, considering these games are available via other methods, saying that "the older engine gets, less chance it'll become compatible with further systems, but in case of OpenTomb, you can port it to any platform you wish."

The development team also stated that they tried multiple times to contact Eidos about the project, but never heard back from the company, according to the project's FAQ. Faced with this lack of a response, they began building the original Tomb Raider games on their own, relying on their own original code and other work previously done on other open source projects.

As of now, there's no indication of when the original Tomb Raider will be available to play. Still, the team has been active in the Tomb Raider forums enough to have a dedicated subforum where interested players can check in for further updates.

The official Tomb Raider franchise, meanwhile, is reportedly set to continue in a game called Shadow of the Tomb Raider, following 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider, while we also recently got our first look at the reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise,
