New Release Dates Announced for Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5

"We begin concurrent production on four sequels."

After being delayed multiple times, James Cameron's Avatar sequels now have new release dates.

Announced on the film's Facebook page, Avatar 2 will hit theaters December 18, 2020 followed by Avatar 3 on December 17, 2021, then three years later with Avatar 4 opening December 20, 2024, and, finally, Avatar 5 will hit theaters December 19, 2025.

"Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels," according to the Facebook post.

Avatar 2 was originally supposed to come out in late 2018 but was recently delayed because of how massive an undertaking it is to develop several sequels all at once. According to Cameron, "its an epic undertaking" that 's "unlike building the Three Gorges dam." Avatar 3, 4, and 5, were originally slated to open in 2020, 2022, and 2023 but have since been pushed a few years back now.

Motion-capture for Avatar 2 is set to begin in August, with Avatar star Sigourney Weaver revealing that filming will start sometime in late 2017. The cast had already begun training for the sequels. Last year, Cameron expressed his desire to raise the bar for filmmaking and hopes to release all four Avatar sequels with glasses-free 3D and higher frame-rates.
