An Australian-made documentary seeking to explore and discuss the history and impact of GoldenEye 007 on N64 has been announced today. GoldenEra will examine how an inexperienced team were able to defy expectations and build one of the most respected and influential console shooters ever.
The team has revealed the film alongside an IndieGoGo campaign to assist in its completion. They also showcased a brief trailer, which features interviews with a variety of experts from both the game and media industries (including GoldenEye 007 veterans Karl Hilton and B. Jones, as well as IGN’s Peer Schneider and Tristan Ogilvie).
“Thankfully we’ve been able to film many interviews for the documentary already,” said GoldenEra director Drew Roller. “And after speaking to several of GoldenEye’s developers, as well as many industry experts from IGN, Kotaku, GameSpot and Good Game, we’ve found a story that’s even more fascinating than we hoped.”
As a result, the team has turned to crowdfunding to facilitate a UK filming leg “to capture many more stories and create the documentary this game deserves.” The budget has been pegged at $85,000 USD but stretch goals are in place should funding exceed the original goal, including a North American filming leg and a trip to Verzasca Dam in Switzerland (the location of the film’s iconic bungee jump sequence).
GoldenEra is on track for a late 2017 release.
Disclosure: GoldenEra producer Narayan Pattison was formerly editor in chief and publishing director at IGN Australia. Pattison also previously worked at Official PlayStation Magazine – Australia with the author.
