Dark Nights: Metal is shaping up to be one of the most important books in DC's lineup this year. Not only will this event comic reunite Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo on an epic Batman adventure, the series will also serve as a foundation for DC's next wave of Rebirth titles.
Today at C2E2, DC revealed "Dark Matter," a new publishing initiative that begins with Dark Nights: Metal and includes five new series making their debuts in Fall 2017. Each of these new books will feature characters and concepts introduced in Dark Nights: Metal. According to DC, the focus of the Dark Matter line will be on "epic graphic storytelling." As such, the Dark Matter line will be supervised by superstar artists Greg Capullo, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita, Jr.

“What excites me most is that this series of books takes full advantage of the talent and vision of the creative team,” said DC Publisher Dan DiDio in the company's press release. “Comics are a visual medium and with these titles, the artists are working hand in hand with the writers in shaping the look and direction of their characters. In reaffirming the craft of making comics, we’ve brought together a master class of talent, led by Greg Capullo, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr., to help set the style, tone and visual direction for these books. With these four industry giants taking the lead, I feel we can bring the power and energy expected from superhero storytelling back to the page.”
DC first revealed Dark Nights: Metal at FanExpo Dallas earlier this month. Metal will reunite Batman's New 52 creative team for a story that spans the width and breadth of the DC Universe and involves a new mystery surrounding Thnagarian Nth Metal. The series will have a much more bombastic tone than Snyder and Capullo's previous work, with Snyder teasing, "Dark Nights: Metal will be celebratory, huge and crazy. I’ve said it before: I am going for out-of-control dinosaurs and lasers."
Clearly, that approach is also inspiring these new books.
