Ant-Man and the Wasp Director Teases Sequel's Suits, Tech

Janet van Dyne's suit was also present at Marvel's presentation.

As has become customary for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, each hero goes through a visual update with each new appearance. Such is the case for Ant-Man, as well as the introduction of the Wasp in 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp.

During a tour of Marvel Studios, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed and Marvel Co-Head of Visual Development Andy Park hinted at what viewers can expect in the upcoming sequel.

"One of the things with our movie that’s different and that I love is that all the technology — all the Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Wasp technology — it’s all a product of the Hank Pym character so it’s got to have a different look than the stuff that [Tony] Stark designs and all the other designs," Reed said.

Ant-Man's newest suit, according to Reed, will be a blend of what the team liked from both his appearances in his original solo film as well as in Captain America: Civil War — what Reed calls a "modern version of the tech" used in his original, older suit.

"We know Pym Technologies was destroyed in the first movie. Where is Hank Pym now? What is he doing," Reed said, teasing how the technology might continue to evolve in this sequel. Michael Douglas has confirmed he'll return as Hank Pym.

Reed, who has denied reports that Hawkeye is in Ant-Man and the Wasp, also hinted that these suits will be able to do new things as the technology in them is updated, which will play a role in the creation of the suit Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) wears.

Marvel teased both Hope's new costume, as well as the suit her mother Janet wore, which was showcased in a flashback during the original Ant-Man. Reed did not tell those in attendance whether Janet would return in the sequel, however, a lingering question following the revelation in the first film that she was lost to the quantum realm.

What the Ant-Man sequel team could share, though, was an idea of how the growing and shrinking technology will extend beyond the suits. Marvel showcased storyboards for a scene in which Luis' (Michael Peña) van is caught in the mouth of a dog, having been shrunk down. This echoes Ant-Man's use of the Pym technology to shrink and then regrow a truck during Civil War's airplane tarmac battle scene.

Ant-Man and the Wasp will be released in theaters on July 6, 2018.
