Dragon Ball Super Episode 69 Review

Share.

A series of increasingly strange events.

Warning: The following contains spoilers about the episode.

One of the stranger episodes in Dragon Ball Super’s history, "Goku vs Arale! A Ridiculous Battle Will End The Earth?!" is light hearted journey that puts the heroes in very odd situations. However, the weird events that take place and the odd humor feel out of place for Dragon Ball, and often times left me wondering if I was even watching the correct show.

The strongest points of Episode 69 occur when we see our heroes in weird, new situations. This is almost immediately visible with Goku being depicted as a security guard at the award show that is the focus of the episode. It actually took me a moment to realize who it was, as his short hair and fancy suit go a long way to hide his identity. The scene doesn’t last long, but it’s a fun moment and shows off another side of Goku we almost never see. I must admit though, I was sad to see the suit get ruined as it was a refreshing new look for his character.

Along with Goku, Vegeta is also the center of many strange moments. His suit is quite dashing as well, and it made me laugh to see that even at a formal event he is as grumpy as ever. Things get even better as he and Arale fight, and his reaction to knocking her head off really had me smiling. This is just one of the many instances where their interactions had me laughing, and truly the best moments I found were when Vegeta and Arale are on screen together.

The wild and unusual humor is all that Episode 69 has to offer unfortunately. The story that is put forth makes little sense, even by the standards of the Dragon Ball series. It’s clear that this is done by design, but this comedic, gag-reel style of episode feels so out of place within the Dragon Ball universe, that between the laughs I was often questioning what I was even watching. Last week’s episode did a much better job of telling a Dragon Ball story while adding in funny moments to shake things up.

The Verdict

Although filled with several laughs, Episode 69 is so different from a normal Dragon Ball episode, that it often times felt like an entirely different show. With so many fourth wall-breaking jokes and strange moments, I’m left wondering if this episode would have been better suited as a one-shot spin off instead of being included in the cannon of the regular series.
