BoxBoy Amiibo Announced in Japan Alongside New Game

Square deal.

Nintendo has announced a surprise addition to its amiibo line-up - 3DS eShop star, Qbby from the BoxBoy series - alongside a third (and possibly final) game in the platforming series.

Currently only announced by Nintendo for release in Japan, a physical edition of the new game, Goodbye! BoxBoy! will include a soundtrack CD and the heart-stoppingly cute figurine:

The BoxBoy Amiibo and Goodbye! BoxBoy! collection. Commence squealing.

There's no firm word yet on what the amiibo's in-game function will be, aside from the fact that it will "unlock secrets". It's unclear whether it will interact with other games (I would lose it if it made shellfish or something rain from the sky in Zelda: Breath of the Wild).

The BoxBoy series - created by Kirby developer HAL Laboratory - has been a quiet hit since it began in 2015. Jose called the original "one of the cleverest puzzle platformers I’ve ever played", while sequel BoxBoxBoy! was "a great example of how to do a lot with only a little".

Goodbye! BoxBoy! and the accompanying Qbby amiibo will be released in Japan on February 2.
