13 Things The Last Guardian Doesn't Tell You

Even though much of The Last Guardian is very forward about its messy controls, what you learn about Trico and the environment is largely unexplained. Below are some Tips on things The Last Guardian doesn't tell you.

This guide also includes some information about handling Trico at the bottom of the page.

  • The fastest way to calm Trico is to pet Trico’s neck.
  • You can climb on Trico’s tail. And move it! Hold O to drag Trico's tail.
  • If Trico starts going the wrong direction in a platforming puzzle, find a safe spot to jump off. He could accidentally take you bat farther than needed. Jumping off resets Trico a bit, and he’ll more likely go the direction you need.
  • Trico can call you too! When Trico howls and you don’t see a way out, jump on your companion and Trico will most likely get you two out of the area. Trico can climb on tall pillars.
  • Give Trico a good pet before you enter a small passage where Trico can’t follow. It’ll help your heart a bit when you hear Trico whining.
  • Help Trico fight by ripping off the helmets of suits once they’re knocked over.
  • You can tiptoe around by holding circle, but it doesn’t help with anything. The only way to avoid detection by the stone guards is to completely go around them, which is seldom possible.
  • You can push enemies away, and hang on to their backs. Do so to prevent the stone guards from throwing spears at Trico, but be sure to get out of the way when Trico attacks.
  • If you hang out in certain areas for too long you'll hear narration give you tips on what to do next. There's a Trophy for hearing all the hints.
  • The closer you get to a glowing Barrel, or Trico treat, you’ll notice blue butterflies following you. When you’re right next to a barrel you’ll have three butterflies around you. More than three means there’s more than one barrel.
  • Barrels are the only collectibles in the game. Collect and feed them all to Trico to get a Trophy!
  • You can tumble and push things with square.
  • The blue doors you’ll find in the walls are a bad thing. If you’re captured you’ll be carried through one and you’ll get a game over.

A big part of The Last Guardian is learning to understand Trico. Early on this can be a little difficult. Scroll past the two cute Trico pictures to read our Trico guide.

Trico’s got the crazy eyes, and they’re important indicators for Trico’s demeanor

  • Dark green eyes: Normal, affectionate Trico
  • White/Yellow: Distracted or mesmerized Trico
  • Pink: Hostile Trico

In addition to his eyes, Trico also has a few different calls. Trico will always whine when the boy is too far away, but Trico does a lot of grunting and howling if it's ready to take the boy somewhere. When you see Trico looking up high and grunting, make sure you jump on Trico so you can get to the next area.

A ways into the game you’ll be able to give Trico commands. Here’s what each does:

Tap R1 to call Trico
Hold R1+X - Sit/scold
Hold R1+O - Stand/praise
Hold R1+ Triangle - Stomp
Hold R1+ Square - Swipe

Some of these actions won't work if there isn't enough space for Trico to move. When Trico can't perform the command, it whines.

Hold R1 + Direction - Trico will walk to where you’re pointing. With this Trico can make certain jumps and will jump on walls. This can help you reach a ledge that’s too high
