10 Big Missing Games of PSX 2016

We miss you, Sora.

Last weekend's PlayStation Experience was a big show for Sony fans. We got confirmation of long-rumored projects like The Last of Us Part II and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, plus surprises like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and even Knack 2.

But even with a solid lineup of announcements, a few major games sat out this year's show. Some of these were just announced a few months back at Sony's whirlwind E3 2016 press conference, but others have been absent for years.

Here are 10 games we were hoping to see at this year's show:

Media Molecule’s bizarre creation game hasn’t been shown since last year’s Paris Games Week, skipping lots of shows since then including last year’s PlayStation Experience, E3, and more. IGN spoke with Media Molecule about “dreamsurfing” last December and the studio explained why it wasn’t at E3, but we haven’t heard much since then. With PlayStation VR now out in the wild, the next time we see Dreams would be a perfect time to finally show off VR support.

After a long wait for the studio’s next project, we finally learned that Sony Bend was working on Days Gone back at E3. The first project for Bend since 2012’s Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Days Gone showed off a lot of impressive under-the-hood tech by generating so many Freakers (the game’s name for zombies) on-screen at once, something that would surely be even more impressive now that the PS4 Pro has officially been revealed. PSX feels like it would have been the perfect time to check in with a first-party game like this, and hopefully we won’t have to wait until next E3 to find out more.

It's been a long time since we've seen Deep Down. Capcom's mysterious game was revealed at the PS4's original announcement event in 2013, and revealed to be free-to-play at TGS 2013. Since then, Capcom has been mostly silent, revealing just a few tantalizing screenshots and delaying the game in early 2014 following some controversy due to its lack of female characters. Other than a trailer at TGS 2014, we last heard the game had reportedly "undergone some changes" as of early 2015. It's not clear if Deep Down even still exists, but PSX would have been a great time to show off the PS4 exclusive in its new form. If the game hasn't been quietly canceled, maybe we'll see more early next year after Capcom has shipped Resident Evil 7.

Detroit: Become Human

Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream made a lot of fans’ dreams come true at Paris Games Week last year when they revealed that the Kara tech demo from 2012 was being expanded into a full game. We got an extended look at Detroit during E3 that featured just one of the android vignettes we can expect from the game, but Quantic Dream has been silent since then. With no release date announced yet, the team can take its time, but PSX would have been a nice place to meet another character from that world.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake blew our minds when it was unveiled at E3 2015, and at least year’s PSX we got our first look at gameplay and found out the game will be released in multiple parts. Since then, we haven’t heard much, and the game skipped E3 this year as well as the Tokyo Game Show, where it was widely expected to be shown. Remake’s absence may simply be due to Square Enix wanting to focus on the release of Final Fantasy XV, so with that finally out in stores, hopefully we’ll see more of Cloud and friends in 2017. January 31 will mark the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII’s original release in Japan, which feels like a great day to break the silence.

God of War

When it was revealed at E3, the new vision for God of War was a stunning way to get people interested in the franchise, even if they weren’t crazy about it before. While Sony Santa Monica warned us ahead of time that the game wouldn’t be at PSX, it still would have been a perfect venue to show off more of the adventures of bearded Kratos to PlayStation’s most faithful fans. Still, with such a dramatic shift for the series in what we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to fault Santa Monica for taking their time, and if they can maintain the level of quality from the E3 demo, we’ll wait as long as they want.

Kingdom Hearts III

It’s already been two and a half years since Square Enix finally confirmed Kingdom Hearts III at E3 2013, and we’ve only gotten small glimpses ever since. We know we’ll be seeing worlds from Tangled and Big Hero 6, but we haven’t seen much else other than very brief snippets of footage and a couple of new screenshots. Square Enix may have been waiting for the release of Final Fantasy XV to shine the spotlight on Kingdom Hearts, plus Kingdom Hearts collections are still coming in January and March. With those out of the way, perhaps we’ll see more of Kingdom Hearts 3 at early 2017 events like PAX East or E3. If not, next year’s D23 Expo is a safe bet for a new look at Sora’s adventures.

Shenmue III

Shenmue III was one of the big surprises of E3 2015 alongside Final Fantasy VII Remake and the re-reveal of The Last Guardian. After an incredibly successful crowdfunding campaign that met its goal in just a a few hours, Yu Suzuki and his team have spent the past year and a half toiling away on the project. We’ve gotten a few small updates since the reveal, including the game's returning voice cast and a couple of new screenshots, but aside from these, the development has been kept relatively secret. Here’s to hoping we hear more about the game at E3 2017.

Spider-Man

One of Sony’s big surprises from E3 2016 was the short trailer for Insomniac’s Spider-Man game. The gorgeous trailer showcased fast and frantic open-world action with Spider-Man zipping around Manhattan. Spider-Man isn't based off the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. Instead, the PlayStation 4 exclusive will focus on a more experienced Peter Parker as he battles crime in New York City. Insomniac confirmed that the game wouldn’t be at PSX prior to the show, which leaves us wondering when we’ll see it next. The safe bet is either at E3 2017, or at Disney’s D23 Expo in July.

Michel Ancel’s Wild is a game we only see once a year, but holy hell does it make a lasting impression. Its awesome Paris Games Week demo from 2015 made it one of our most anticipated games, which made its absence since then all the more painful. I mean, who doesn't want to assume control of a giant bear or a murder of crows, and use them to ravage a gang of cannibals before coming face-to-face with a giant naked snake goddess? That's right, you all want that.
