The Nintendo Switch currently has no option to transfer save data from one console to another.
After today's Nintendo Switch day one update, SD card support and online features have both become enabled on the new console, but game saves can only be stored on the console's 32GB internal storage, with no apparent option to transfer them.
In January, Nintendo told Kotaku that all saves would be stored internally, but made no mention of if or how they could be transferred.
In other respects, the console appears to have no problem in managing storage between the two devices. With an SD card inserted, users can choose where to download games themselves, and screenshots (another function added in today's update) can be transferred freely in the Data Management menu. Save data, however, can only be deleted, not moved or copied.
The Nintendo 3DS did have tools to keep game saves intact, so it is possible that these will be added as an app or update, but there is currently no information as to whether that will happen. The Nintendo 3DS did, however, also allow downloaded games to save data directly to an SD card.
Nintendo's thinking here is a little opaque - it could be that the company doesn't want to allow Switch save files to proliferate online, but it begs the question as to what happens to a player's saved games if a Switch console breaks, or customers purchase a limited edition or new version.
We have contacted Nintendo, but have so far received no response.
The Nintendo Switch releases tomorrow, March 3, but its day one update has revealed a couple of new things about the console - including that it retains Nintendo's much-maligned online friend codes.
