Sony Can Now Turn Physical Card Games Into Digital Ones

Magic: The Tethering

Sony and its new smartphone game studio, ForwardWorks have revealed Project Field, an NFC platform for physical card games.

Announced by Sony Japan, Field uses a bespoke card pad (which can be connected wirelessly to smartphones and tablets). Performing actions on the pad - say turning a card on its side - with Field-compatible cards will then perform the same action and its connected effects on the connected screen.

As reported by Engadget, Field offers both reading and writing capabilities, meaning statuses or levels can saved onto the cards' chips and be carried over between games.

So far, the only title announced for Field is a new Yokai Watch card game. The platform is currently only scheduled for release in Japan, with no plans announced for other territories.

We could get into the idea of buying real Hearthstone cards to play the digital game with, or combining digital Magic: The Gathering with physical, but honestly, the best way I can think of illustrating the potential for this is Adventure Time's "floop the pig" scene:

Joe Skrebels is IGN's UK News Editor, and he firmly believes Card Wars needs to be scrapped and remade for Field. Follow him on Twitter.
