MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries has been announced and is slated to release in 2018.
Piranha Games, the studio behind MechWarrior Online, announced that it's developing the project (via RockPaperShotgun), which will be a single-player game will a full campaign mode. No specific platforms were announced.
According to the game's official site, MechWarrior 5 puts players in "the role of a rookie MechWarrior pilot thrust into combat as the Third Succession War continues to fracture the Inner Sphere." Throughout the campaign, players will "take contracts from the factions of [their] choosing and engage in tactical, first-person, PvE Mech combat through an immersive, career-based Mercenary campaign driven by player choice."
While MechWarrior Online was built using CryEngine, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will use Unreal Engine 4. Piranha also assured fans the studio still plans to continue support for MechWarrior Online.
Following the release of MechWarrior 4 in 2000, developer FASA Interactive started work on a fifth installment, but the project never saw the light of day. Piranha later joined the fray, announcing plans to relaunch the franchise with a MechWarrior reboot in 2009.
