Man Steals $5 Million, Spends $1 Million on Game of War

He faces up to 20 years in prison.

A man form Rocklin, California pleaded guilty to embezzling approximately $5 million from his workplace, $1 million of which was spent on "player fees for an online video game."

A press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of California announced Kevin Lee Co's guilty plea on December 8, with the Sacramento Business Journal reporting that about $1 million of the stolen funds was spent on the mobile game Game of War, as spotted by Kotaku.

Game of War came to mobile devices in 2013, and its marketing famously included a Super Bowl commercial in 2015 featuring Kate Upton.

Among the other items Co purchased with the stolen funds are "luxury cars, home furniture, and NFL football and NBA basketball season tickets" according to the Attorney's Office.

Co worked for Holt of California as the company's accounting department manager and embezzled funds from 2008 through March 2015. He also, according to the Attorney's Office, "engaged in a money laundering scheme" to hide where the stolen money was coming from.

He will be sentenced in 2017, facing 20 years in jail and up to $250,000 in fines for the wire fraud charges against him, as well as $500,000 or up to twice the property involved in the money laundering.
