How TWD's Negan and Carl Story Compares to the Comics

Let's talk about the Judith situation.

Major spoilers for The Walking Dead, both TV show and comics, continue below. Read on at your own risk.

Best laid plans, right? Carl's mission to infiltrate the Sanctuary and kill Negan was cut short almost immediately on The Walking Dead (despite his mowing down a couple Saviors along the way), but it did lead to some unexpected consequences. Instead of killing Carl upon his capture, Negan actually took the young Grimes under his wing for this week's extended episode, "Sing Me a Song," in a way that showed more depth of character in the Saviors' leader than we've seen so far.

Click on the arrow to progress through and see how the TV show's depiction of Negan and Carl's relationship compares to the comics. Due to the graphic nature of both The Walking Dead comics and TV show, the slideshow below contains M-rated, violent imagery and strong language.

Despite the divergent storylines in other parts of the episode, the majority of Negan and Carl's arc in "Sing Me a Song" comes straight from the source material, all the way down to most of the dialogue. It's interesting that the writing team decided to switch things up so much at the end, though. The most notable difference between the two versions of the story is that Judith is alive on the show while she's long dead in the comics. Seeing how that impacts Negan and Rick's inevitable confrontation will be very interesting to watch play out.
