Game of Thrones Star Peter Vaughan Dies at 93


The actor passed away in England, surrounded by his family.

Peter Vaughan, the actor who starred as Maester Aemon Targaryen on HBO's fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, has died. He was 93.

According to the actor's agent Sally Long-Innes, as reported by Variety, Vaughan passed away "peacefully with his family around him" in England this morning on Tuesday, December 6.

Game of Thrones writer and producer Bryan Cogman, shared a few words about the actor's passing in a post on Twitter, saying, "Rest in Peace to our own Maester Aemon, Peter Vaughan, who passed away this morning at age 93. Truly an honor to have known him."

Vaughan appeared in 11 episodes of Game of Thrones throughout its first five seasons, first debuting in season 1's third episode "Lord Snow."

In addition to his role in HBO's aforementioned fantasy series, Vaughan played Harry Grout in the British comedy television series Porridge. He also appeared in several films, including Brazil and Time Bandits, both of which were directed by Terry Gilliam. He also played Giles Corey in the film adaptation of The Crucible.
