Final Fantasy XV Aiming to Add Custom Character Creation

Making that party bigger.

Final Fantasy XV director, Hajime Tabata has revealed the short-, mid- and long-term plans for updating the new action-RPG.

Alongside the game's six pieces of paid DLC, Tabata used a blog post to explain that the game will receive free updates throughout the next year, including both tweaks to existing content and brand new material.

Most ambitiously, Tabata announces that his team is looking into making "certain key characters playable" (presumably above and beyond the three other main party members, who will each become playable in their respective DLC packs), as well as "considering the possibility of customizable avatars".

In the shorter term, an update will be released to enhance the gameplay in FFXV's 13th chapter (which many, including our reviewer, have criticised), as well as adding new scenes to explain certain characters' motivations a little better.

Tabata also brings up the possibility of adding:

  • A "New Game+" style mode that carries stats and progress over from previous playthroughs
  • Items that allow for low-level challenge runs, or total invincibility
  • Limited-time content, such as timed hunts or special boss fight rewards
  • Tweaks for readability of fonts

The game's season pass plans to add a lot itself, with story expansions for Ignis, Prompto and Gladio, themed item packs and, most interestingly, a full four-player co-op multiplayer expansion called Comrades.

While we had a few reservations, we gave Final Fantasy XV an 8.2 review, saying that "in the end, its beauty, charm, and commitment to the bond between its four protagonists keep it glued together, even when some of its design and story elements threaten to pull it apart."
