Disney Made More Money This Year at the Box Office Than Any Studio Ever

And Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has yet to be released.

Following this weekend's box office results, Walt Disney Studios has set a new box office record domestically while also crossing a major international gross milestone for the first time.

Walt Disney Studios, which encompasses Marvel Studios, Pixar, Disney Animation, and more, has so far made over an estimated $2.49 billion at the box office this year, the most any company has ever made at the domestic box office.

The previous record for the highest domestic box office year was held by Universal Pictures for its 2015 results, which were bolstered by the release of Jurassic World, Furious 7, and Minions. Disney came in second place to Universal last year, with approximately $2.3 billion dollars at the box office.

Walt Disney's 2016 can be attributed to successes throughout the year — Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, Zootopia, and Doctor Strange have all made over $200 million each this year. The continued success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens into the new year after its release in December 2015 was another major factor to the company's haul.

Warner Bros., which released both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad this year, is currently in second place to Disney at this year's domestic box office, while Fox is in third, largely thanks to the success of Deadpool.

Disney's 2016 cume will continue to climb thanks to the recent release of animated hit Moana, which has been number one at the box office for its first two weekends of release, as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which will not be released in theaters until December 16.

Disney has also crossed the $4 billion mark at the international box office for the first time. Universal was the first company to ever pass that point, having done so in 2015. Two of Disney's films this year crossed the $1 billion mark individually worldwide — Captain America: Civil War and Finding Dory — while The Jungle Book came close to that number, with approximately $966 million. Doctor Strange has also made $600 million worldwide so far, becoming the highest-grossing single-character Marvel introduction film.
