Death Stranding's E3 Trailer Wasn't Running on Horizon Zero Dawn Engine

Hideo Kojima says the Death Stranding trailer from The Game Awards was running in realtime on a PS4 Pro in 4K resolution."

Hideo Kojima has confirmed the Death Stranding trailer shown during last week's The Game Awards show was indeed running on a PS4.

Speaking to IGN, Kojima revealed "The Death Stranding trailer we showed at TGA was running in real time and in 4K on PS4 Pro."

While this new teaser was on a PS4, Kojima clarified that the previously-shown E3 announcement trailer was created before Kojima Productions settled on Guerilla Games' Decima engine for Death Stranding, meaning the E3 video was not running in Decima and isn't indicative of the final game.

"The collaboration [with Guerilla Games] started later…" Kojima said. "The teaser we showed at E3 was in a different engine."

In January 2016, Kojima and PS4 system architect Mark Cerny traveled all over the world visiting developers in search of an engine for Death Stranding. According to Kojima, his studio chose not to create their own engine since he didn't want to "make everyone wait too long for our game."

"Guerrilla Games had the right engine," Kojima said. "Their engine is well suited to the tools and systems of an open-world game. This was a very important aspect for us."

"And so I started a collaboration with [Hermen Hulst, Studio Head of Guerilla Games] and his team. We believe their engine will help make a better game and a better future for our industry."

There are still a lot of questions surrounding Death Stranding, from the biggest trailer secrets you might have missed to wild theories that both trailers reveal messages when played together. We do know that Kojima intends for Death Stranding to be an open-world game with a lot of player freedom, and co-op will be a feature.
