Death Stranding Will Run in the Horizon Zero Dawn Engine

And a Kojima Productions "satellite studio" will open inside of Guerrilla Games.

Death Stranding, the debut game of Hideo Kojima’s new development studio Kojima Productions, will be powered by the Decima engine, developed by Horizon Zero Dawn studio Guerrilla Games. The news was announced earlier today at PlayStation Experience, during an interview between Kojima and Geoff Keighley.

PlayStation 4 systems architect Mark Cerny took the stage with Guerrilla Games director Hermen Hulst to explain more about the technicalities of the engine.

"The Decima engine is not just about rendering," according to Hulst, citing its handling of AI, physics, logic, and the "entire world creation suite." Kojima also added that the Decima engine is "very appropriate for work on open worlds," which lines up with Kojima's previous discussion of his upcoming title as an open-world game.

A "small satellite" Kojima Productions studio will also be launched within Guerrilla Games in Amsterdam, according to Hulst.

Death Stranding's second teaser debuted at The Game Awards on Thursday, another cinematic trailer that revealed characters played by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and actor Mads Mikkelsen. During Kojima and Keighley's interview, another version of that trailer played, this time paired with the song Easy Way Out by Low Roar, who also did the song in the first E3 trailer.

According to Kojima, “If you pay attention to the lyrics while watching, the trailer will look completely different.” We broke down all the details in the new Death Stranding trailer yesterday.
