Ash vs Evil Dead: "Home Again" Review

"You can really taste the angel dust!"

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

"He's like a superhero whose power is ruining everything."

What a terrifically demented episode of Ash vs Evil Dead.

Not only was it funny and gross in all the grotesque ways this franchise should be at its very best, but it tied many different parts of the saga together in great ways. "Home Again" managed circle back to the original movies (including Army of Darkness, which got a big time-travel shout out!) while also bringing us back to Season 1 and the way that run ended, with the final two episodes taking place at the cabin. Here though, it was the cabin from the original movie back in 1982.

Plus, you had Ash smoking angel dust next to a duct-taped Pablo corpse ("Don't you worry, my little burrito"), Ash sucking Deadite poison out of his own leg, Ash making himself vomit with cinnamon and boiling water ("Soup's on!") the return of demon-filled Henrietta, Professor Knowby actually popping up as a character, Ruby and Kelly battling an evil tree - this one just nailed everything from a blood-spattered action/comedy standpoint.

What's even more exciting is the fact that the Season 2 finale now feels overflowing with possibilities. What's going to happen here exactly now that Ash is tinkering with the past? With the potential "profound causality paradoxes?" Will Pablo return? Will Ash cease to be somehow? And what will become of Kelly, who began the season almost admiring Ash but now seems like she might take off on her own? Will Ash head into the next season without a team, or will Ash's team move forward with out Ash? The best part is that most of these options could work well.

We're beyond stopping the Deadite takeover now. Baal was defeated, Pablo paid the ultimate price, and now a desperate (and drunk) Ash is trying to go back and change his own life and stop the original hellstorm. It's clearly a mistake, but what kind of a mistake will it be? And how impactful? The show's coming back so the question is: Will Ash makes things worse again or will the Ghostbeaters actually find some sort of reprieve? Oh, and what the Williams family secret that Brock was trying to get out before he got run over?

The Verdict

"Home Again" was a sharply funny and maliciously gory chapter that set us up wonderfully for the Season 2 finale. Time traveling back to Necronomicon "ground zero" is a crazy and unexpected detour that feels like the perfect way to wrap up the season.
