The Thrills and Chills of Halloween Horror Nights

The Shining, Saw and more.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando kicked off with nine haunted houses, five scare zones, and two live shows this year, delivering all the scares and thrills the attraction has become known for, not to mention a few laughs along the way.

Five of the houses were based on horror movies or shows, including American Horror Story, Ash vs Evil Dead (responsible for the aforementioned laughs), Saw, The Shining, and the Blumhouse Productions flicks Insidious, The Purge, and Sinister. The other four were original concepts, featuring possessed Scarecrows stalking an abandoned farm, Nosferatu-style vampires so horrific it’s like they’re out to restore the reputation Twilight ruined for their kind, a Voodoo Queen and her human-sacrificing minions who have taken up residence in a wrecked steamboat, and warrior demons slaughtering angels in a battle between heaven and hell.

Take a look at our photo gallery for some sights inside the mazes and scare zones (areas of the park where “scareactors” roam free) to see what I thought.

Longtime HHN fans will be sad to hear this is the 27th and final year for Bill & Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure, a comedy show with pop culture satire, crude humor, and scantily clad dancers. This year’s performance was pretty self-aware, and for as outrageous and at times cringe-worthy the shtick can be, it nonetheless managed to go out on a nostalgic, emotional note. No word yet on what, if anything, will take the show’s place next year.

The other show, a dance performance called Academy of Villains: Afterlife, was canceled due to damage caused by hurricane Irma.

The one question I always get asked about HHN is if these haunted houses are actually “scary,” and the answer is of course subjective. If watching horror movies make you cover your eyes and grab on to the person next to you, then you’ll most definitely get your money’s worth of scares. There are different horrors in each house, so chances are something will eventually rattle your cage. Even the toughest, bravest, nothing-scares-me guy in our group jumped when a demonic clown popped around the corner revving a chainsaw.

Halloween Horror Nights 27 is now underway on select nights at Universal Orlando. Make sure to also check out our look inside the houses found at Universal Hollywood.
