Linda Hamilton, who starred as Sarah Connor in the original 1984 The Terminator and the 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgement Day, will return for James Cameron's new installment in the sci-fi film franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron shared the news at a private event to celebrate The Terminator series, expressing his desire to make a statement on gender roles in action films.
"As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it's going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she's become return," he said, noting there have been plenty of movies where 50 and 60-year-old guys are action heroes, "but there isn't an example of that for women."
Cameron is producing the new Terminator movie, with Deadpool director Tim Miller attached to helm. Arnold Schwarzenegger will return for the film, and Cameron teased his possible role earlier this year. The movie will serve as a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and will set up for a new generation of characters in the Terminator universe.
"We're starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story," Cameron said. "We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we'll have Arnold and Linda's characters to anchor it."
Cameron has previously said he's looking at the possibility of doing a trilogy of new Terminator movies, which could serve as a reinvention of the franchise.
