Star Wars: Rian Johnson Casts Doubt on Directing Ep. IX

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is doubtful he'll take on Episode IX.

During a conference in Japan (via io9), Johnson revealed the plan was never for him to direct both The Last Jedi and Episode IX, and so the filmmaker currently doesn't "know what’s going to happen with" the next Star Wars movie following Colin Trevorrow's departure from the next "Episode" Star Wars film.

“For me, I was entirely focused on Episode VIII and having this experience and now I’m just thinking of putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it," Johnson said. "So no, I'm not really thinking about that now."

Though the director did not specifically rule out the possibility of directing Episode IX, he indicates he's excited to see the next movie as "an audience member again" as opposed to the one shepherding the film through production.

“Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again," Johnson said. "And to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

Recent reports have suggested that Johnson is being eyed to take over directing duties for Episode IX.
