Sean Penn is set to star in his first regular TV role for a new Hulu series.
Variety reports Penn will play the main role in The First, a series from Beau Willimon that's set in the near future and follows the first human mission to Mars. The First promises to explore the different challenges associated with attempting interplanetary colonization.

Details about Penn's character are currently unknown. Penn's acting career spans a wide array of films, including Mystic River, Milk, I Am Sam and The Gunman. While he's also appeared on various shows, like Friends and Two and a Half Men, The First will be the actor's first recurring leading role on a series.
"I have such deep admiration for Sean's immense talent and extraordinary body of work," said Willimon. "I feel very lucky to be collaborating with an artist of his caliber."
The First will start production this year and will premiere on Hulu and Channel 4 sometime in 2018.
Hulu was recently a big winner at this year's 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, with its original series The Handmaid Tale's taking several awards, including Best Drama Series. For more on what lies ahead for the service, read up on what Hulu's historic Emmy win means for streaming.
