Netflix's Novel Way to Keep You Laughing

Comedy is subjective but you can still study its patterns.

Netflix has given us a peek behind the curtain and into some of the process it uses to determine what, exactly, you might be into in regards to comedy.

According to the company, 63% of its users have watched a stand-up special on the service. That's a pretty substantial number, and represents some of the biggest names in comedy.  Netflix can then use the themes, or even specific jokes, to figure out what your tastes are.

Netflix also has a cool flow chart to help determine what comedy special you should check out. There are options for some pretty specific circumstances, like whether or not your mom can "take a punch," or if you have a soul or not. It's pretty great way to figure out what's going to hit you hardest depending on your mood.

This isn't a one-to-one comparison to the complex algorithms Netflix uses to figure out exactly what shows and movies it thinks will most appeal to you, but it is a way to look at the process from a purely human perspective.

Netflix has definitely carved out a niche, not just in stand-up, but in original television shows. This month, Netflix original BoJack Horseman returns with a new season, as well as the unusual Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light.
