NES Classic Mini Returning to Stores

Back from the dead (again).

Nintendo has announced that we'll see more stock of the upcoming SNES Classic Edition, and a return to stores for its seemingly discontinued predecessor, the NES Classic Edition.

In a press release, Nintendo announced that, "Due to incredible demand for the upcoming [SNES Classic], Nintendo plans to ship the retro-inspired product into 2018. Originally, shipments were announced to cease at the end of this calendar year."

The press release adds that the NES Classic will return on an unspecified date in summer 2018. No further details were given - is it too much to hope that they'll sort out those tiny controller wires, too?

Both micro-consoles have suffered from stock shortages, with the NES Classic Edition officially discontinued in April this year before many people could find one to buy. At the time, Nintendo said it had no plans to manufacture any more.

This is a pointed attempt to appease those who have been left disappointed in the lack of opportunity to buy the consoles - the press release continues: "Fans have shown their unbridled enthusiasm for these Classic Edition systems, so Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves."

Nintendo adds that more units of the SNES Classic will be shipped on launch day in the US than NES Classic shipped there in the entirety of last year, "with subsequent shipments arriving in stores regularly."

The NES Classic comprised 30 games from Nintendo's first home console, and ended up selling at least 1.5 million units before its premature demise.

Its successor includes 21 SNES games - including the never-before-released Star Fox 2 - and will arrive on September 29.
