Kingsman 2 Knocks IT Off at Box Office

The LEGO Ninjago disappoints with franchise-low debut.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle debuted in first place at the domestic box office, dethroning Stephen King's with an estimated opening weekend haul of $39 million.

The Matthew Vaughn-directed sequel managed to surpass the Kingsman: The Secret Service's $36.2 million debut, but didn't quite reach industry expectations, which pegged The Golden Circle's opening weekend at $40 million. The first film had considerable longevity in North American theaters, grossing a total of $128.3 million, so it stands to reason Kingsman 2 may have similar staying power.

This weekend also brought with it the release of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, which placed third with an underwhelming opening weekend estimated at $21.2 million. As such, the latest entry in Warner Bros.' LEGO film franchise is now its lowest-grossing, with an opening haul well below The LEGO Movie's $69.1 million and The LEGO Batman Movie's $53 million debut.

The remaining wide release of the weekend, Friend Request, didn't fare particularly well either. Director Simon Verhoeven's horror movie placed seventh with an estimated $2.4 million.

Stephen King's IT, which was the box office leader for the past two weeks, was knocked down to second place, earning an estimated $30 million. Director Andrés Muschietti's critically acclaimed film is now the highest-grossing R-rated horror movie ever (not accounting for inflation) with a domestic total of $266.3 million, eclipsing the $232.9 million earned by The Exorcist.

Here are estimates for the top 10 releases at the North American box office this weekend, according to comScore:

1. Kingsman: The Golden Circle $39 million

2. Stephen King's IT $30 million

3. The LEGO Ninjago Movie $21.2 million

6. mother! $3.3 million

7. Friend Request $2.4 million

8. The Hitman's Bodyguard $1.9 million
