Dragon Ball Super Episode 107 Review

Share.

Time to retire old man.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Warriors are dropping out left and right, but the Tournament of Power continues onward this week. Getting to see Jiren in action was a nice surprise, but Episode 107 revolved mostly around the underhanded tactics of Frost, the devious counterpart to Frieza. Some tense moments and interesting fights between Frost and Roshi helped make 107 entertaining, but strange narrative decisions held it back from being a truly great episode.

The action opened up with a bang as we saw Jiren demolish a warrior from another universe. I was pleased with how this was handled, showcasing only a fraction of what he is capable of by keeping his time on screen limited. It’s been clear for awhile that Jiren is meant to be Goku's primary antagonist, and it’s great that they continue to tease his abilities without revealing too much about him. Beyond his obviously great strength, Super does a fantastic job at conveying the respect and fear that Jiren’s allies have for him, further developing his mysterious persona and my interest in his character.

Frost was the true villain this week, and he did an excellent job in the role. As the counterpart to Frieza, my expectations for him have always been high and Super continues to meet and surpass them. Watching Frost pick apart Master Roshi was quite exciting, as although Frost clearly was overpowering him, Roshi did his best to hold on.  The events of Episode 105 added some emotional weight to the battle as well, as we see the already weakened and battered Roshi struggling to even stay alive against the clearly superior foe. Frost was the perfect opponent in that regard. He’s a sinister, devious warrior and has no qualms about torturing his opponents, making his treatment of Master Roshi feel all the more cruel.

While I was more than pleased to watch Roshi and Frost fight, Goku’s brief scene prior left me scratching my head. His passionate cries for his old mentor as Roshi was beaten added some great weight to the scene, but moments later he gets caught up in a battle with another warrior. This directly contradicts his behavior just a few episodes ago, where we see Goku waste energy solely to protect Roshi’s life. Although it’s brief, the scene leaves Goku looking quite silly, and likely should’ve been left out, or Super should’ve come up with a greater threat that Goku simply couldn’t ignore.

I again found myself questioning what was happening when Roshi continued to use the Evil Containment Wave over and over. Master Roshi has always been depicted as an extremely intelligent fighter and I was surprised to see Roshi get baited into nearly killing Vegeta with his Evil Containment Wave. It’s not something I would expect from the old warrior, and felt out of place when it happened, even if it did lead to an entertaining scene with Vegeta only moments later.

The Verdict

Episode 107 is packed with action in a great way. Jiren's full potential is teased again as he obliterates a foe with a single punch, while Master Roshi and Frost battle it out in a fight that swings back and forth several times. A couple odd scenes and narrative choices do unfortunately hold back the episode, but weren’t so damaging as to ruin the overall thrill of combat that the Tournament of Power has done such a momentous job at maintaining.
