Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be compatible with Amiibo and support Amiibo Functionality on both the Wii U and Switch consoles.
Players will be able to use a variety of both Legend of Zelda themed Amiibo and non-Zelda Amiibo to scan in to perform a variety of features depending on the particular Amiibo.
Amiibo can be scanned in using the Sheikah Slate, much like other Runes. Note that by default, the Amiibo Rune is not active and listed on your Runes - you must turn the ability on in the options menu.
For a list of Amiibo features, see below:
By tapping the Wolf Link Amiibo during play, you will be able to summon a Wolf Link partner character from Twilight Princess to assist you. Wolf Link will help out both in combat and in scavenging, and will even hunt and track down other wildlife to provide you with food. If you have your Shrine Sensor on, Wolf Link will also search out nearby shrines for you.
By default, Wolf Link will be summoned with three hearts, but there is a way to increase his life. By playing Twilight Princess HD, you can use the Wolf Link Amiibo to enter the exclusive Cave of Shadows. By completing all 40 levels of the cave, you will be asked to save your progress to the Amiibo - which will track how many hearts you have left at the end of the dungeon. Saving this will mean that summoning Wolf Link in Breath of the Wild will appear with however many hearts you had at the end of the dungeon.
Remember that you can also use the Zelda amiibo to replenish your hearts in the Cave of Shadows, and once initially saved, the Wolf Link amiibo can also grant additional hearts. By using them at the end of the dungeon before saving your progress, you can ensure that a maximum heart Wolf Link will be saved.
Video: What Every Amiibo Does
Tap any of the Legend of Zelda Amiibo (which includes the Smash Series, 30th Anniversary Series, and Breath of the Wild Series) you can summon in a supply drop of a handful of different helpful Ingredients and Items that Link can collect - along with a treasure chest that contains a random - but usually themed - item. The item can range from rare materials, weapons, shields - or even an easter egg item like the original sword from The Legend of Zelda.
Note: Upon scanning the Smash Series Link for the first time, you'll be able to summon the legendary horse Epona! Epona is technically a wild horse and must be registered if you wish to keep her - so make sure you do not summon Epona in an area where you cannot get to a stable!
Some Zelda Amiibo have the same effects as others - see the chart below for details.
