Zelda: Breath of the Wild Runs Better in Handheld Mode

Un-Linked.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reportedly runs better when played on the Nintendo Switch tablet than while docked.

Digital Foundry has discovered that Breath of the Wild doesn't suffer similar frame stutter issues in handheld mode than are seen while playing on the TV. It's something we even pointed out in IGN's review of the new Legend of Zelda as well.

The possible reason? The theory revolves around the resolution differences between the two Nintendo Switch modes. Breath of the Wild outputs at 900p while docked, compared to 720p in portable mode.

This means there is a 56 percent increase in pixel count, so the increased resolution on the big screen "may be sapping memory bandwidth away from the main processor cores, making us more prone to slowdown when the CPU is under load."

Additionally, the only noticeable visual difference between TV and portable modes relates to texture filtering. Other than that, Breath of the Wild appears to look very similar on Nintendo Switch, no matter what way you play it.

You can see how gorgeous the game is for yourself, by the way, as IGN captured 36 beautiful Breath of the Wild screenshots.
