The 100: "We Will Rise" Review

Days of moonshine and hydrazine.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The 100 remains a commendable show for how much the past informs the present, which this episode underlined by notably evoking Lexa, Lincoln and even the long gone Wells. These deaths were all big moments on the show and big occurrences for characters still on the show, so it’s definitely good that none of them are forgotten and continue to have a big impact on the loved ones they left behind.

The juxtaposition of Clarke looking lovingly at her drawing of Lexa with the reveal that she had just slept with Niylah was a well done, realistic beat. Clarke’s still living her life, but Lexa’s still on her mind - likely more so now that she’s sharing her bed for the first time since Lexa’s death. It was a poignant, well acted scene by Eliza Taylor and Jessica Harmon… that was just slightly undercut by all the outwardly silly terms said so close together about “going to space to make nightblood” and how a “Death Wave” is coming. (which made me think of Death Blow from Seinfeld).

Octavia meanwhile had a big moment of truth when she very nearly executed Illian, only for Kane to talk her down - noting that she would be killing him in the same way (and place!) Lincoln died. First off, I was just glad that Octavia letting all the angry villagers Arkadians in wasn’t another “She has another plan” fake out after so many this season. Second, it was a good scene for Octavia -- especially on the heels of her being so blunt with Bellamy about still blaming him for Lincoln's death -- and it seems, perhaps a turning point for her in her previously lethal grieving process.

Jaha getting drunk with Jasper felt a bit random. It’s still difficult to know exactly what Jaha’s role on this show is meant to be at this point or why people would still listen to him after everything -- but it did lead to Monty bringing up Wells in another gut punch moment.

The main storyline in this episode -- with Clarke, Bellamy and Roan on a mission to get that hydrazine to Raven -- was a very fun one, and included some very cool action moments as Bellamy and Roan attempted to rescue Clarke and that aforementioned hydrazine. Clarke’s line about Bellamy being “special” felt a bit much, but I did like the dynamic between mismatched buddy cop duo Bellamy and Roan here, who’d never really worked together like this before.

As for the events over in Becca’s lab, Luna’s frequent use of water-related terminology sometimes is a bit forced, but I did enjoy her and Murphy’s heart to heart in the wake of some major Raven outbursts - and that Raven, even when she got a hold of herself, still wasn’t in the frame of mind to actually apologize to Murphy.

RIP, License Plate Man! I liked your licence plates.

The Verdict

On a show where a ton of characters have died, this episode of The 100 was notable for evoking the memories of several in subtle or major ways. The barrel of hydrazine being lost is a bit of another “of course!” moment in the one crisis after another way this show works, but once more we’re seeing the value in this large ensemble being able to interact in new pairings, whether it be Luna & Murphy or Roan & Bellamy.
