The 100: Eliza Taylor on Clarke's Uneasy Alliance With Roan

What's Clarke's next move in the wake of their biggest crisis yet?

The 100just renewed for Season 5 – continues to move at a breakneck speed in Season 4, as the characters face their greatest threat yet – a meltdown of the world’s remaining nuclear power plants that could kill everyone left on the planet.

At the center of it all, of course, is Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor), who continues to do all she can to save as many as she can – though last week’s episode ended with a huge moment of despair, as an explosion caused by Illian (Chai Hansen) took away Arkadia as a viable place to at least keep 100 people alive.

This week’s new episode finds Clarke, Roan (Zach McGowan) and Bellamy (Bob Morley) working together to get some now-precious hydrazine to Raven (Lindsey Morgan), now that the work she’s doing with Abby (Paige Turco) and the rocket they discovered may be the only path left for survival. I spoke to Taylor about what to expect this week and beyond, as Clarke continues to fight on.

IGN: Clarke and Roan had just come to an agreement… and then there was a giant explosion. Do you wish sometimes Clarke could lose her cool and yell “You’ve got to be kidding me?”

Eliza Taylor: [Laughs] Yeah! I would love that actually. I think that would be a nice touch.

IGN: So what is her next move?

Taylor: Well her next move is to find another solution, of course. In this next episode, it’s all about trying to find another viable option and getting this hydrazine to the island without a hitch.

IGN: It’s an interesting trio with Clarke, Roan and Bellamy going on this mission together.

Taylor: Yeah, I love working with those two. They’re insanely talented and their characters really haven’t gotten along. So it was fun to play mom and be like “Okay, you two, behave while we get this to the island.” It was a really fun episode to shoot.

IGN: Clarke and Roan have this respect for each other but at the same time there’s some major conflict. How tenuous does this alliance continue to be?

Taylor: It’s very hard to preserve this alliance for obvious reasons. No one is particularly happy about this new team that they’ve formed. But at the end of the day, there’s a lot of respect and understanding of the fact that they both want what’s best for everyone.

IGN: A recurring theme that’s come up is that these people are fighting and fighting for survival but what does it mean if all you have is the fight? Where do you think Clarke sits on that question?

Taylor: I think there is absolutely a fear that maybe they’re doing all this work for nothing. But she doesn’t let that stop her from giving everything that she’s got to make it worth it for everyone and to ultimately survive.

IGN: What does she think of her mom's relationship with Kane?

Taylor: It’s never really spoken but she kind of just leaves them be. I think it’s about time that her mom has moved on from Jake and is happy and I think it’s nice to see her mom being looked after by someone because she’s had to be on her own all this time.

IGN: Raven was challenging Clarke a bit earlier this season. What will things be like when they’re reunited at Becca’s lab?

Taylor: It’s tough because they’re in such a confined space together. Obviously tensions will rise. Clarke and Raven this season are really not seeing eye to eye. They will definitely have their moment.

The 100 airs Wednesday nights on the CW.
