Niantic Labs is currently at work on adding trading to Pokemon Go, but when the feature does eventually arrive, you'll only be able to exchange creatures with other players in your general proximity.
This week at GDC, senior product manager Tatsuo Nomura confirmed to Polygon that trading "won’t be through the internet." Instead, "the person needs to be in your proximity."
Nomura explained why this will be the case, saying, "you shouldn’t be able to exchange your Pokemon with someone who is 100 miles away from you."
While trading is expected to come to Pokemon Go sometime later this year, Niantic is still exploring how best to implement the feature. "We're still trying to come up with an answer [to trading] that makes sense so it doesn't kill the game," he said, emphasizing the importance of getting it right. "If we fail this, we can easily kill the game."
Pokemon Go has proven to be an incredible success since its launch last year. After passing 500 million downloads in September, Niantic Labs mobile phenomenon has since gone on to soar past a staggering 650 million downloads.
80 new Pokemon from the Johto region were recently added to Pokemon Go, and in celebration of Pokemon Day, players can currently capture a party hat-wearing Pikachu in the wild. Head over to our Pokemon Go wiki guide for loads of tips and tricks, including how to get Umbreon and Espeon.
