Patrick Stewart's Future With the X-Men Franchise After Logan

Full spoilers for Logan!

Logan has been marketed from the beginning as the last ride for Wolverine, and Hugh Jackman has been open about how this is his final X-Men movie (though, if the Avengers come calling, he might change his tune).

But if you've seen Logan, chances are you walked away wondering what's next for series star Patrick Stewart, who plays an aged, ailing Charles Xavier in the film. He has made some conflicting comments about whether or not this is his last X-Men movie, but his recent statements helped clarify his stance. Full spoilers for Logan continue below.

Logan marks the deaths of both Professor X and Wolverine, but considering it is set at the ends of their lives, their always could be the opportunity for them to pop up in movies that take place earlier in the X-Men film timeline. Though Jackman was pretty explicit about this being his swan song, Stewart initially told Entertainment Tonight he hadn't "raised the flag that says goodbye" just yet.

That was before he saw the movie, though. Stewart took part in a SiriusXM Town Hall with Jackson and director James Mangold, and explained that after watching Logan he decided it was the perfect way to conclude his journey with the X-Men franchise.

"A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat, watching the movie,” said Stewart, via Entertainment Weekly. "And I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it. Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing. Then, the movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.'"

That's not to say Professor X will never appear in the X-Men movies again. James McAvoy has been playing a younger version of the character in an earlier timeline in the series, most recently reprising his role in X-Men: Apocalypse. But don't expect to see many more Charles Xavier-focused films. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently told Vanity Fair that the X-Men series is moving away from reliance on the Professor X/Magneto relationship (and Wolverine) to explore other stories, like the discussed New Mutants movie.

"We cannot, once again, explore the Erik/Charles dynamic," she said, adding that while the shift is "both liberating and makes me nervous," for her "it's mostly liberating" because "there are other stories to tell."

Jean Grey actress Sophie Turner recently said the next X-Men movie will begin filming soon, and rumor has it the movie will be titled X-Men: Supernova and center around Dark Phoenix.

Of course, in today's day and age, few declarations are permanent in Hollywood, so we could see some amazing pitch (like a Fox/MCU crossover) being enough to get Jackman and/or Stewart out of X-Men retirement. But for now, their days with the X-Men franchise are over. Will you miss their takes on Wolverine and Charles Xavier? Let us know in the comments below.
