Warner Bros.' new Matrix movie won't be a reboot, according to the film's writer.
Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, Ready Player One) took to Twitter to briefly discuss his potential plan for a new movie in the seminal sci-fi franchise, where he confirmed he has no interest in doing a remake. Penn is especially against the idea of recasting Keanu Reeves' character Neo, and believes there's plenty of new stories to tell in the Matrix universe.
"Can't comment yet except to say that the words 'reboot' and 'remake' were from an article. Let's stop responding to inaccurate news," Penn tweeted out. "If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves," he added. "How about just re-release the matrix? Don't reboot it, you can't do better. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it's a brilliant idea that generates great stories."
It's been reported that Warner Bros. is interested in casting Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther) to star in the new Matrix film in an unknown role, and wants to explore The Matrix universe like Disney did with its Star Wars universe.
The Matrix creators the Wachowski siblings are not at all involved in the project - however, the studio would want their blessing before moving forward. Keanu Reeves recently said he'd be open to returning to another installment but only if the Wachowskis wrote and directed.
