Live-Action Death Note Movie Release Date Announced

Hear Willem Dafoe as Ryuk in the first Netflix teaser.

The first teaser for Netflix's live-action take on the beloved manga and anime Death Note reveals the film's release date.

Directed by Blair Witch and The Guest's Adam Wingard, Death Note will be available to stream on Netflix on August 25, the first teaser for the movie confirms.

The trailer offers a brief introduction to the film's main characters — Light (Paper Towns' Nat Wolff), L (Get Out's LaKeith Stanfield), and Mia (The Leftovers' Margaret Qualley) — while also debuting the first voiceover from Willem Dafoe, who plays the Shinigami Ryuk. Take a look at the characters below:

Death Note tells the story of high schooler Light, who comes across the Death Note notebook, which gives him the power to kill others simply by writing their name in the book. The Death Note comes with a few extra rules, however, but Light begins to use his powers to kill those he sees unfit to live.

Death Note will also star Paul Nakauchi (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) and Shea Whigham (American Hustle).
