Lethal Weapon: How Far Will Riggs Go in the Season Finale?

Lethal Weapon EP Matt Miller teases Riggs' vigilante turn.

In last week's penultimate episode of FOX's Lethal Weapon: Season 1 -- which got an early renewal for Season 2 last month -- Clayne Crawford's Riggs had a bomb dropped on him. After finally starting to move on from his late wife Miranda, Riggs discovers that she was, indeed, targeted by the Cartel for execution. Will this new information drive Riggs to do terrible things in Lethal Weapon's Season 1 finale, "Commencement," which airs this Wednesday, March 15th?

I spoke to Lethal Weapon executive producer Matt Miller (Chuck, The 100) about this week's season ender to find out what might lie in store for Riggs and Murtaugh as Riggs, once again, searches for revenge.

"The news hits Riggs harder this time," Miller said, referring back to the episode "Jingle Bell Glock" when Riggs first began to think Miranda was murdered. "Back then, he was trying to convince himself of something that didn't exist. And everyone sort of thought that it was Christmas time and he was feeling lonely and maybe he was creating something that wasn't there."

"In 'Commencement,' he finds out definitively that the Cartel is, in fact, responsible for his wife's death and then all of those thoughts that he had, all the paranoia he was feeling back then, he finds out it's all actually real. The conspiracy theories turn out to be true."

Miller continued, "It just all kinds of explodes in him and we get to see an episode, in 'Commencement,' that's not like any other we've done all season. In terms of the storytelling, in terms of the tone, in terms of how far Riggs is going to go to avenge his wife. Also, in terms of how far Murtaugh's going to go to either protect Riggs."

In the film series, back in Lethal Weapon 2, Riggs drops being a cop and decides to become a full-blown vigilante when he discovers the truth about his wife. Will the TV show move along those lines or will Riggs stay closer to the side of the law? "I think that's kind of the question for Riggs. How far is he willing to go?," Miller teased. "And that's the question he asks himself in the season finale. And that's a question Murtaugh has to ask. How far is he willing to go to back up his partner? How far is Riggs willing to go and where is the line between cop and cold-blooded killer?"

When talking about how the two characters have grown over the season, Miller shared what's been his favorite part about their relationship. "Every time one is down the other's there to pick him back up," he said. "And certainly in Season 1, Riggs has been down a lot more than Murtaugh, but I think that dynamic may change in Season 2. But I really like the quieter moments between the two guys at the end of the episodes. When they realize that despite all their differences and despite all the insanity that Riggs puts Murtaugh through, they kind of need each other. And they love each other to a certain extent."

Lethal Weapon's Season 1 finale, "Commencement," airs Wednesday, March 15th on FOX.
