Joe Manganiello Uncertain if He's Still Deathstroke in The Batman

"Um, maybe, we'll see."

Actor Joe Manganiello is no longer certain about his role as Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s Batman movie.

During an interview with Pittsburgh Today Live promoting the new Smurfs movie, Manganiello was briefly questioned about his role as the villain in the upcoming Batman film. Asked if he was playing Deathstroke, Manganiello responded with “Umm. Maybe. We’ll see.”

As Ben Affleck stepped down from directing The Batman, we found that the project was going to be rewritten by screenwriter Chris Terrio.  Manganiello’s uncertainty of his future with the film lines up with potential changes to The Batman’s script.

In a previous interview, Affleck laid out his reasons for wanting Deathstroke as the villain in his feature film, stating that “it seems like a great counterpart to Batman” and that he’d “never been utilised in a movie before”.  Affleck also praised the casting of Joe Manganiello in the role and seemed overall positive about the character and actor.

Manganiello himself also previously expressed excitement for playing the villain in The Batman, stating that he has read nearly every Deathstroke comic book to gather information.  He also talked about his training to get ready for the role, including learning how to use various weapons and martial arts.  Manganiello’s enthusiasm in these earlier interviews made the actor’s change of tone a stark contrast in the recent interview.

As The Batman has already been delayed due to these changes, DC are reportedly looking to fast-track a different DCEU movie to fill the 2018 void.  The only film currently slated for a 2018 release is the solo Aquaman film starring Jason Momoa which was recently pushed back to December that year.

DC fans can still look forward to the release of Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017, which will be followed later in the year by Justice League on November 17, 2017.
