Iron Fist: Episode 9 Review

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

Full spoilers for Iron Fist's ninth episode follow.

Colleen Banner

Iron Fist’s ninth episode saw Danny, Colleen, and Claire holding Madame Gao captive, but it sure seemed a lot more like she had them hostage. This episode also saw some of Harold Meachum’s goofiest scenes yet — yes, Harold lives (again)!

Harold emerged from the lake Ward had dumped his body in and then staggered off towards the city. His mind seemed to be rebooting itself slowly so he spent the first portion of the episode acting remarkably similar to Ben Stiller’s “Simple Jack” character from Tropic Thunder.

But, in reality, it’s the episode’s attempt at paying off Ward listing his dad as “Frank Stein” on his phone. Yes, Harold is basically Frankenstein’s Monster for this early portion of the episode, a resurrected creature stumbling along, trying to piece together who and what he is — he speaks out loud to himself, which is very comic book-y in its own right, enough so that I could practically see dialogue balloons next to his head — before growing smarter and more confrontational. That all sounds a lot better than how it played out.

Arguably the series’ worst scene was when Harold rewarded his long-suffering assistant Kyle with an ice cream dinner the latter said he would have if he could live forever — only to bludgeon him to death with an ice cream scooper. Yes, this episode had a guy get killed by an ice cream scooper. Ward’s brand of crazy is really hammy and I don’t envy poor David Wenham doing his damnedest to try (in vain) to sell it.

Harold seemed to forgive Ward for killing him and then let him go free, although we later learned he was just playing him. A drug-addled Ward, who had learned from gangster Hai-Qing Yang that there’s no way to truly kill Harold, ended up framed, arrested, and under the observation of Dr. Edmunds, the same shrink from Episode 2.

(All this resurrection-meets-evil craziness business — which Daredevil Season 2 hinted at — makes me very skittish about how Marvel-Netflix will almost inevitably end up bringing Elektra back from the dead. But that’s a discussion for another time.)

And then there was Joy, who finally learned her father Harold is very much alive. Ward may be gone, but Harold wants Joy to assume his place. My guess is that ultimately Joy, who has a more stable head on her shoulders than Ward, will probably end up dying trying to redeem herself by stopping her father.

Does Madame Gao have super powers? Is she psychic or just a really good researcher? She claims to have been alive since at least the 18th century, but if she really does have such powers then why is she only using them now? Why would she have shared any territory at all with other crime bosses when she can mind-job people like that?

Although the heroes seem to think everything Gao says can’t be trusted, the one indisputable truth she uttered this episode was when she said of Danny and his friends, “You’re such children.” Danny seriously reacted like a petulant kid early in the episode when he barked at Colleen and Claire, “Now you’re ganging up on me?!” Dude, you’re The Iron Fist not a sixteen-year-old arguing with his parents!

Colleen’s injury from the eighth episode led to her being sick from the poisoned blade, which in turn led to the return of her sensei Bakuto and Danny learning to use his Iron Fist to heal Colleen. Bakuto’s subsequent rescue?/capture? of Gao, with Colleen being fully aware of and complicit in them also taking Danny with them will certainly require some explaining on her part when her new boyfriend wakes up.

Finally, this episode marked the first appearance of Davos (played by Sherlock’s Sacha Dhawan), Danny’s childhood friend in K’un-Lun who in the Marvel Comics is the supervillain known as Steel Serpent. If there’s one thing we know for certain after one episode it’s that Davos can make deadly throwing stars out of tin foil. That was legitimately impressive.

The Verdict

Madame Gao talked (and talked) her way into our heroes’ heads in Iron Fist’s ninth episode as Colleen suffered from the effects of poison and Danny sought answers about his father and The Hand. Bakuto returned, Davos debuted, and Harold rose from the grave in what was one of the show’s sillier episodes. Also, never complain to a health nut about what type of ice cream they bought you for dinner. It will not end well.
