Oscar-winning actor and Harry Potter alum Jim Broadbent has revealed info on who he's playing in Game of Thrones: Season 7.
While speaking to ScreenCrush, Broadbent explained he's portraying an archmaester on the show, "an old professor character." The actor also revealed that he shares most of his scenes with Sam Tarley actor John Bradley. However, Broadbent did not reveal his character's name.
“I did five episodes," Broadbent said of his Season 7 role. "I did sort of one major scene in each episode.”
Spoiler warning from the Song of Ice and Fire book follows...
As Uproxx notes, it sounds very likely that Broadbent is playing Maester Marwyn AKA Marwyn the Mage, a character who spends time with Sam before venturing out to meet with Daenerys in Meereen. However, Dany's story -- like many on the show -- has already evolved past the point where she is in the books, so the show would need to alter this plot point if it's included at all.
At end of Game of Thrones: Season 6, Sam Tarley, along with Gilly and her son, Sam, end up at the Citadel in Oldtown, where Sam is told to wait for the archmaester.
Broadbent noted he didn't film of his scenes on location and confirmed his character isn't involved in any CGI action sequences.
Game of Thrones fans will get to find out more about Broadbent's archmaester character when the show returns much later than usual in July. According to Sir Davos Seaworth actor Liam Cunningham, Season 7 will have "a lot of characters coming together."
