GameStop Expects Switch Shortages Throughout 2017

"Every time we get it out in our stores it's literally gone."

Based on the high demand for Nintendo Switch thus far, video game retailer GameStop expects Nintendo's new console to be in short supply throughout the year.

During its Q4 2016 earnings call, GameStop COO Tony Bartel said "the demand is incredibly strong" for Nintendo Switch, noting that "as soon as we get it into our stores it's out within hours." As such, Bartel said they "anticipate that we're going to be chasing supply this entire year."

He also spoke to the console's high attach rate, especially in the cast of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. "We almost have a 1:1 attach with Zelda," Bartel said.

He then reiterated the high demand for Switch and how quickly it's been flying off shelves, adding, "there's tremendous demand for this and we just don't know how high it is because every time we get it out in our stores it's literally gone."

Switch launched earlier this month and reportedly sold 1.5 million units in its first week. Nintendo will reportedly double console production over its next fiscal year.

Some users have experienced sync issues with Joy-Con controllers, and Nintendo confirmed the source of the problem earlier this week, telling IGN that "a manufacturing variation has resulted in wireless interference with a small number of the left Joy-Con." The company also said that "moving forward this will not be an issue."
