Dragon Ball Super Episode 82 Review

Justice for all.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

A new challenger appears before Goku, and with Zen-Oh’s permission another exhibition match is allowed to take place. Toppo wishes to deal out some justice to the villain he perceives Goku to be and the fight that ensues pushes both warriors to the very edge. However, there is more going on than a simple fight, and it’s the growing theme of Goku as a villain that propels Episode 82.

Toppo, the Warrior of Justice from Universe 11 is the latest adversary for Goku. What I find most appealing about him, aside from his Ginyu Force inspired antics, is that he clearly is the hero of his universe. The way he acts and speaks to both Goku and those around him paints a clear picture: he thinks Goku is a bad guy. Of course, Toppo is also a great fighter and watching him pummel Goku and then survive a Kamehameha with little issue was quite thrilling. Most of all, though, the scene where he rejects Goku’s handshake stood out to me. As simple as it was, rejecting Goku’s offer of peace and friendship hammered home just the kind of person Toppo is, and how upset and disgusted he is with Goku’s actions.

Beerus was also quite active in Episode 82, and it felt like much of his dialogue was meant to echo my thoughts. Throughout the entire episode, Beerus is berating Goku for not taking things seriously. It’s great to see someone actually yelling some sense at him, as Goku continues to act like a child in the face of Universal erasure. For being the God of Destruction, Beerus often finds himself sidelined while others fight, so it’s good to see him growing increasingly upset and displeased with things as they unravel. Here’s hoping in the future Beerus gets pushed just a little too far and does something beyond just yell at Goku.

I’ve written about Goku’s accidental descent into villainy before, and Super has slowly been introducing the idea as well. Now they fully embrace it by putting Goku up against Toppo. Much like Bergamo, he treats Goku like a bad guy and makes sure that everyone watching is able to see this. However, Episode 82 took it a step further in a way I greatly appreciated. The episode showed brief scenes that, taken out of context, would make Goku look like a villain to an outsider. Instead of defending himself with words, Goku’s desire to fight and his childish approach to things has continued to dig him a hole that I look forward to seeing how he gets out of in coming episodes.

The Verdict

Although Episode 82 promised a good fight, it delivered much more thanks to some clever storytelling. Toppo ended up being far more powerful than he seemed, but it was the way he treated Goku that proved even more interesting. On that same note, the theme of Goku being cast as the villain was furthered quite a bit, and has left our hero looking like a true enemy to all those in attendance at the Tournament of Power.
