Rogue One and Ip Man actor Donnie Yen has been tapped to star in an adaptation of Square Enix's Sleeping Dogs.
Deadline reports that Yen, who recently starred in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, will play the Wei Shen character in the upcoming film. The movie's plot is described as following "an undercover police officer (Yen) on a mission to take down one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the notorious Triads."
Neal Moritz’s Original Film (Fast and the Furious) is producing the Sleeping Dogs adaptation along with with DJ2 Entertainment. Moritz, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will be producers, and Toby Ascher and Stephan Bugaj are executive producing. So far there is no attached director or slated release date.
Square Enix released Sleeping Dogs in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows. It followed the story of Wei Shen, an undercover Hong Kong-American police officer whose mission is to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organization. It makes sense that Yen would be the person tapped to play the Shen character, as Sleeping Dogs' gameplay focused on the sort of martial arts/parkour-style stunts that Yen is known for.
IGN reviewed Sleeping Dogs with a score of 8.5, saying it had "proven itself worthy of joining the top class of open-world sandbox games revolutionized by the likes of Grand Theft Auto IV."
