Warning: this article contains spoilers for the most recent episode of Arrow!
Arrow's latest episode answered the single biggest question surrounding Season 5: just who is underneath Prometheus' hood? It turns out that Adrian Chase, current Star City District Attorney and apparent ally to Team Arrow, is the person that's been so busy making Oliver Queen's life miserable these past few months. This reveal also suggests that the show is making a significant break from the comics, as Chase isn't the masked killer known as Vigilante.
In light of this major reveal, it would seem that our earlier theory about Chase being both Vigilante and Prometheus no longer holds water. After all, we saw the two villains fight each other during the course of "Fighting Fire With Fire," and Chase appeared alongside Ollie even as the rest of Team Arrow were busy preventing Vigilante from assassinating the mayor. Clearly, Prometheus and Vigilante are two completely different characters, right?
Perhaps, but we don't think it's quite that simple. Nor does this prove that the two characters aren't connected. There's a strong possibility that Vigilante and Prometheus are brothers.
While Adrian Chase is the character most commonly associated with the Vigilante name, he's far from the only person to use that name in the DC Universe. Nor is he the only member of his family to take up the mantle. DC introduced a new version of Vigilante in 2008, one who was eventually revealed to be Dorian Chase, brother to the late Adrian.
At this point, it seems very likely that Dorian is the one masquerading as Vigilante on Arrow. We expect it's only a matter of time until it's revealed that actor Josh Segarra has been playing dual roles all along. Perhaps when Felicity finally finishes parsing the data she "borrowed" from Prometheus' mother, she'll learn that Justin Claybourne actually fathered twin boys before being killed by the Arrow. Those two sons were both motivated to take up the vigilante lifestyle. But where Adrian dedicated himself to destroying Oliver Queen, Dorian seems to have a more generalized vendetta against criminals everywhere. As we've seen already, Vigilante didn't seem to have any particular beef with Green Arrow until Ollie began interfering in his murderous crusade.
This theory would certainly explain one lingering question from "Fighting Fire With Fire." If Adrian Chase isn't Vigilante, why does Vigilante sound so much like Josh Segarra? If it turns out that Segarra is playing twin brothers, then suddenly that discrepancy makes a whole lot more sense. However, it should be noted that Segarra told reporters he ISN'T playing Vigilante, but... well, actors have been known to lie in the past. Regardless of whether it's Segarra, the theory about Vigilante being Dorian still carries weight.
The big question right now is whether the two Chase brothers are working together or are pursuing separate ends. If it's the latter, that opens up an interesting shift for the series as it heads into the home stretch for Season 5. Most years, Ollie is battling a single, unified threat, one that's committed to Star City's destruction. But here, he may find himself trapped between two villains who hate each other as much as they do the Green Arrow. The closest we've seen to a conflict like that came during Season 2, when Sebastian Blood turned against Slade Wilson. It would be a welcome change of pace to see a season hinge on two main villains rather than one.
If the brothers are working together, however, that may lead to even more interesting character drama. We're reminded of the big twist in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige. That's another example of a story with the reveal that one actor had secretly playing two different characters the entire time. In that case, Christian Bale played twin brothers who constantly traded places to create the illusion that there was only one of them.
What if Adrian and Dorian have a similar arrangement going? What if we've been seeing both Adrian and Dorian swapping places as D.A. Chase, Vigilante and Prometheus all season long? Adrian does have a peculiar habit of disappearing right before both Prometheus and Vigilante make an appearance. If this is the case, then it would seem that Prometheus' plot to ruin Ollie's life is even deeper and more elaborate than anyone gave him credit for.
All this being said, we're not entirely prepared to throw out our our earlier theory about Vigilante and Prometheus being two manifestations of the same, damaged mind. Nor are we convinced the rooftop battle between Prometheus and Vigilante should be taken at face value. That fight had a slightly surreal quality to it, particularly with the way Prometheus threw Vigilante off a building and the latter character simply vanished into the night.
We get the sense that that scene isn't meant to be taken literally. It seemed more like a single character hallucinating and wrestling with the warring sides of his personality. Prometheus (the dark side obsessed with taking revenge on Oliver Queen) won out over Vigilante (the relatively lighter side more interested in pursuing justice than revenge). One or both Chase brothers may be dealing with some severe mental and psychological problems.
Whatever is truly going on with Prometheus and Vigilante, it's pretty clear that revealing Prometheus' identity was just the tip of the iceberg. Expect things to get a lot more crazy and unpredictable going forward.
