Justin Lin, director of four Fast and Furious films and Star Trek Beyond, has signed on to helm the long-gestating Hot Wheels movie.
The Wrap reports Lin will also produce the film based on Mattel's mega-popular line of toy cars. The director's production company, Perfect Storm Entertainment, will also have the option to co-finance the film alongside Legendary Entertainment, according the the report.

Different versions of the film have been in and out of development for over a decade. McG was attached to direct an early iteration for Columbia Pictures before the film landed at Warner Bros. several years later. Legendary became involved in 2011 and went on to hire renowned stunt coordinator Simon Crane to helm the project in 2013. While the movie appears to be on the move again, the Lin-directed film is still in the early stages of development.
This won't be the first Mattel product adapted to film. In addition to a long list of Barbie movies, a movie based on the Mattel action figure Max Steel hits theaters October 14.
