Former SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is a big fan of Early Access, going so far as to suggest the program may be the best thing to ever happen to the video game industry.
"I think Early Access is probably the greatest thing that ever happened to gaming," Tretton said on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, noting that "gamers care about the technology" and "want to have a voice in the game itself."
The former PlayStation boss continued, highlighting the fact that with Early Access, "the developer gets free feedback, they get revenue to help drive the development of their game to the final product and the gamer gets an opporuntity to say, 'I like this, I don't like this.'"
Tretton also discussed the benefit this type of program provides to smaller studios with limited resources like indie developers, and applauded Microsoft for expanding Early Access to Xbox, which was previously limited to PC, opening up new possibilities within the console space.
Be sure to check out our full interview with Tretton and his 19-year career at PlayStation, during which he discusses the struggles in launching PlayStation 3 and weighs in with his thoughts on PS Vita.
