Future Gears of War Games Won't Necessarily Be Shooters

RTS? Match-3 puzzle game?

Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer and creative director of The Coalition, Chuck Osieja have teased that a future Gears of War game could be a different genre from the existing ones.

According to Gamespot, the two attended Xbox Fanfest and were asked the question: "If Gears of War could expand into any other gaming genre, what would it be?"

Phil Spencer told Osieja to be careful about his reply (which some suggest could mean we may be seeing something other than a third person shooter in the future). Osieja gave the corporate answer: "At Microsoft, we evaluate all opportunities for our franchises. So, if the right opportunity presents itself, we'll explore that as something we can offer our fans."

"Definitely when we got the team together and talked about the future of Gears of War, I think there's multiple ways that you can tell that story," Phil Spencer went on to say, after mock-booing Osieja's response. "Multiple gameplay genres. I think it's a really big IP and it's an IP that could exist in linear form, in books--we've seen that; in different gaming genres."

Earlier this year we found out God of War would be switching its gameplay up for its next installment, so who knows where Gears of War could go next?

Gears of War 4 is due for release on October 11, and if you liked Gears of War 3, IGN's multiplayer preview says you're in for a treat.
