Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has revealed who exactly the title refers to.
Spoilers may follow for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In an interview with The New York Times, Johnson said the film's name comes directly from the opening crawl of The Force Awakens and that Luke Skywalker is indeed the last Jedi.
“There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi," Johnson said.
At the end of The Force Awakens, Rey finds Luke alone and away from the life he knew, and the The Last Jedi will explore why Luke isolated himself alongside why he believes “it’s time for the Jedi to end,” as the character said in the sequel's first teaser.
Johnson also confirmed the heart and focus of the film is very much about Luke and Rey's relationship and its "real essence is the development of the two of them.
"And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, what is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi," Johnson explained.
