New Game Project X to Offer 400-Player PvP Matches

Coming in 2018.

Project X, a new shooter from UK developer Automaton, will feature a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds-style mode with 400-player matches.

According to Eurogamer, the massive "last man standing" PvP matches will be made possible through the utilization of SpatialOS, a cloud-based technology that allows studios to "exceed the power of a single game engine or server."

With a higher player count, Project X will naturally feature a larger map than PUBG; Automaton says it's aiming for a 12km by 12km map, compared to PUBG's 8 km by 8km arena. In addition to its Battle Royale mode, the MMO will feature dynamic weather, roaming wildlife, social hubs, and a "player-driven" story.

Project X will be released sometime in 2018.

PUBG has been wildly successful, selling over 10 million copies and recently passing Dota 2 to set a new record for the highest number of concurrent players ever on Steam. Its success has seemingly inspired other developers, such as Automaton, to experiment with the genre.

Most recently, Epic Games added a Battle Royale mode to Fortnite. For more on the action building game, check out IGN's hands-on impressions of its new mode.
