Metroid: Samus Returns' Ending Explained

This page explains Metroid: Samus Returns' endings, including unlockables, and post-credits scene. This page contains spoilers, including HEAVY SPOILERS

Here's everything you can unlock in Metroid: Samus Returns.

  • Beat on Normal - Unlock Hard Mode, Fusion Mode (Fusion Mode requires scanning the Metroid amiibo as well to unlock in the file save menu.)

Metroid: Samus Returns features nine different ending screen variations. Each one is unlocked based on the difficulty and the completion time. Collecting items does not factor in for the ending, but completion does unlock Chozo Memories. Each difficulty setting has three possible outcomes. What changes is Samus and her appearance after she jump sin the air and lands on the Clear Time screen.

Difficulty Requirement Ending
Normal Over 8 hours Gravity Suit
Normal Between 4-8 hours Gravity Suit, helmet off
Normal Under 4 hours Zero Suit Samus
Hard Over 8 hours Gravity Suit, new pose
Hard Between 4-8 hours Gravity Suit, helmet off, green hair (Justin Bailey)
Hard Under 4 hours Justin Bailey Samus - pink, green hair
Fusion Over 8 hours Fusion Suit
Fusion Between 4-8 hours Fusion Suit, helmet off
Fusion Under 4 hours Metroid Fusion ending suit

Watch the full final battle and ending for a Normal 8+ hour run below.

In the post-credits scene of Metroid: Samus Returns, a yellow Hornoad appears to tug at a claw, perhaps Ridley's, and is then attacked by a blob that resembles the X Parasite of Metroid: Fusion. Following the standard behavior of the X Parasite, this blob infects the Hornoad, turning it purple and making it very angry  (see image below).

At the beginning of Metroid: Fusion, Samus shoots a Hornoad releasing the X Parasite, which then infects her. This ending could imply multiple things:

  • It could simply be a reference to unlocking the much harder Fusion Mode in Metroid: Samus Returns. See above Unlockables. In this mode Samus wears her Fusion suit from Metroid: Fusion. It is an apparently a non-canonical bonus mode.
  • It could be a tease for a followup game, perhaps a remake of Fusion. Fusion takes place at the end of the Metroid Timeline, after the events of Super Metroid -- Super Metroid immediately follows the events of Samus Returns in the timeline.

The Metroid timeline, for reference, is as follows:

  • Metroid/Zero Mission
  • Metroid Prime
  • Metroid Prime Hunters
  • Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  • Metroid Prime: Federation Force
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus/Samus Returns
  • Super Metroid
  • Metroid: Other M
  • Metroid Fusion

Here's the first 5 minutes of Fusion Mode.

For each area you 100% complete in Samus Returns you unlock Chozo Memories in the Main Menu.

These are scenes of Chozo history. You can see all 11 of the Chozo Memories and an explanation for each on the Chozo Memories page.
